Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia & Psuedogynecomastia

These are the formal, diagnostic names for the tongue-and-cheek term known as man-boobs. And despite the not-so-serious, urban-dictionary-style colloquialism, one of these can be a weighty medical condition, and both can cause emotional distress and/or psychological trauma.

First, Gynecomastia is not caused by being overweight; it is caused by extra breast tissue. Losing weight will not resolve this condition.

Symptoms of Gynecomastia:

  • The breast gland tissue swells
  • The breast becomes tender
  • The diameter of the areola increases
  • The chest becomes asymmetrical

What causes Gynecomastia?

In adult males, a hormonal imbalance is usually to blame. Testosterone inhibits estrogen, and thus sufficient amounts of testosterone will inhibit the growth of breast tissue. But when there’s an imbalance present, enlarged breasts, or Gynecomastia, may be the result.

Note: (If a man has a single enlarged breast, it may be a breast tumor and physicians must consider a diagnostic workup to include a mammogram and biopsy.)

Other causes of Gynecomastia include kidney failure, alcohol abuse, liver disease, radiation treatment of the testicles, Kilinefelter’s Syndrome, Cannabis and other illegal drug use. Infections of the testicles, thyroid disorders and certain medications like tricyclic antidepressants, anabolic steroids, calcium channel blockers, even antibiotics and anxiety drugs like Valium can be the culprits.

Living with Gynecomastia can be devastating for those who endure the condition on a daily basis. But there is help. Here is a good resource for you or someone you love who’s living with Gynecomastia.

What is Psuedogynecomastia?

Pseudogynecomastia is the appearance of breasts on men.

What causes Pseudogynecomastia?

Pseudogynecomastia is caused by excessive fat tissue, not excessive amounts of breast tissue like Gynecomastia. The good news is that Pseudogynecomastia can be effectively treated by liposuction, particularly SmartLipo®.

Pseudogynecomastia occurs in men as they become older and in younger men who are relatively obese. This is troublesome for men who want to have or maintain their once youthful appearance. Watch Dr. Caruth explain how SmartLipo® works with troubled areas, like excessive fat in areas that are unresponsive to diet and exercise. Although he doesn’t discuss pseudogynecomastis directly, you can see how the procedure works.

Did you know:

It is estimated that more than 50% of male infants are born with enlarged breasts due to high levels of estrogen, which developed while in utero through the mother. The swelling eventually diminishes as the presence of estrogen declines and the baby lives outside the womb.
